Susan and I adopted a beautiful Papillon dog a little over a year ago. She has been such an amazing addition to our family. We never thought we would own such a small dog but she has been so much more than what we expected in such a good way. She loves to play and swim! She goes crazy when I say “want to go swimming!” Having a dog in our life had us looking for options for places to take her, so we decided to visit all of the dog parks in Rio Rancho.

We also get questions from our clients as to where the parks are so…..here is a list of 10 dog parks in Rio Rancho NM and a little bit about what makes each one unique. The location of all of the remaining parks in Rio Rancho is listed as well. We hope you and your beautiful dog(s) enjoy! What is your favorite? Send us a photo of your dog enjoying the dog parks in Rio Rancho.

A Park Above

A Park Above

This park is located near the Cabezon community. It is well maintained and has the most shade structures and places to sit compared to the other dog parks in the city. Bocce courts too. 2441 A Park Above CT SE.

Rio Rancho Dog Parks Cabezon

Cabezon Park

This park is located at the large park in the heart of the Cabezon community. It is positioned to the north of the parking lot. It has two very long and narrow spaces for dogs. I would consider it a medium to large size park just because of the length of each of them. Gravel surface. No shade structures but hopefully the trees can help as they keep growing. There are a few places to sit and relax. 2307 Cabezon Blvd SE

Rio Rancho Dog Park Rainbow

Rainbow Park

This park is located towards the south western edge of Rio Rancho as you drive further west on Southern Blvd past Unser. This dog park has two defined areas. The larger of the two is very large. Other than the park at Havasu Park, this is by far the largest space. The large space also has multiple objects for playing on and around. Ground surface is sand/gravel. There are a few shade options at the northern end of the park. A few benches are also provided. 301 Southern Blvd SE.

Rio Rancho Dog Park Rio Rancho Sports Complex

Rio Rancho Sports Complex

The Rio Rancho Sports Complex is located just outside of the Loma Colorado community off of High Resort Blvd. This park is also well maintained. The larger of the two areas for dogs was quite large. Wood chip surface. Water was available. Some shade structures and a few places to sit. This park also offers tennis courts, a track, a large grass area for soccer/football and baseball fields. 3501 High Resort Blvd.

Rio Rancho Dog Park High Range Park

High Range Park

Located just to the north of Rio Rancho Middle School on Loma Colorado Blvd NE is High Range Park. The two dog parks at this location have a gravel surface. There are a couple of shade options and a few places to sit as well. Medium sized parks. 1901 Loma Colorado Blvd NE.

Los Montoya’s Park

Also in Northern Meadows are these two reasonably sized parks with wood chip surfaces. No shade structures but do really appreciate the trees. 3701 Cam De Los Montoyas.

Rio Rancho Dog Parks Mountain View

Mountain View Park

This park is well named with its wonderful views of the Sandia Mountains. It is one medium sized fenced in area rather than two. It has one small shade structure on the eastern end of the fenced in area. It does offer a few benches for seating. It can be found on the northern side of the park. Just to the east is a skate park. 6441 Grayson Hills Drive NE.

Rio Rancho Dog Parks Rio Vista

Rio Vista Park

This park also offers amazing views of the Sandia Mountains and is close to where you can drive to a parking area to explore the Bosque. It is located in the Rivers Edge 2 community. The fenced in area at Rio Vista Park is just one area rather than two. It a bit more narrow and smaller than most of the other parks in the city. Gravel surface. Does offer limited seating options. Behavioral Tips For Dog Park Attendees

With considering take Poppy to these dog parks, we wanted to make sure we were doing it “right”. Meaning we wanted to make sure to keep Poppy safe while also being a good user of the parks so other dogs and families can enjoy their time as well. We found these tips to be helpful that are provided by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers.

Do

  • Check out the entrance before entering to make sure dogs aren’t congregating there.
  • Pay close attention to their dog’s play style, interrupting play if necessary to calm their dog down.
  • Move around the park so that their dog needs to keep an eye on them.
  • Remove their dog if the dog appears afraid.
  • Remove their dog if it is bullying others.
  • Respect their dog’s wish to leave.
  • Leave special toys at home to avoid resource guarding problems.

Don’t

  • Allow your dog to enter the park if there is a “gang” right next to the entrance.
  • Believe that dogs can “work it out” if you just let them do so.
  • Congregate at a picnic table or other area and chat with dog owners without watching their own dog.
  • Let their frightened dog remain in the park and hope things get better.
  • Listen to other attendees in the park, who may not understand their dog’s needs.
  • Assume a dog is aggressive when it is only trying to communicate its discomfort.
