Dog Parks in Albuquerque

Bud Warren & Lady Dog Park

Bud Warren & Lady Dog Park
Address: 10001 Universe NW
Notes: Fenced; No Lights  Water: Yes

One of my favorite dog parks in Albuquerque is this park. I love the name of this park. It just makes me smile. Another thing I like about this Albuquerque Dog Park is that it has a dedicated area for large dogs and dogs under 25 pounds. This park is located in the NW corner of Rio Rancho near Ventana Ranch. It also feels private. You really cant see this one from the road or parking lot.

Sante Fe Village Dog Park

Santa Fe Village Dog Park
Address: 5700 Bogart NW  Notes: Fenced; Lights
Water: Yes

So far this is the largest dog park I have found in the Albuquerque area. It also had the added bonus of a small dog area. So fun to see the larger dogs running which seemed to be just as far as they could imagine. There were tongues hanging out everywhere.

Ouray Dog Park Albuquerque

Ouray Dog Park
Address: 7500 Ouray NW
Notes: Fenced
Water: Yes

This dog park is a nice option on the west side. It has a wood chip type of ground a just a couple of areas for sitting down. Not as much shade at this park as others, but a nice large area for running around.

Rio Grande Triangle Park

Rio Grande Triangle Park
Address: 1451 Kit Carson SE – Notes: Fenced; Lights
Water: Yes
This park is located in an amazing area. At the south end of Rio Grande Park, you are very near Tingley Beach, the Albuquerque Zoo and the Albuquerque Bio Park. This park is a bit smaller than others in the city, but it does have a cement walking trail around the park. It also has a small section of artificial turf. There are numerous trees for shade but only one shade structure at a bench.

Tower Pond Park Albuquerque

Tower Pond Park
Address: Tower SW and 86th SW Notes: Fenced

Located in southwest Albuquerque, this dog park is located in a beautiful community park that features baseball diamonds and a very large grassy area. This park is long and narrow. On the smaller side compared to some other Albuquerque dog parks, it does have a variety of trees for shade and benches with share coverings.

Westgate Dog Park Albuquerque

Westgate Dog Park
Address: Cartagena & Valley View
Notes: Fenced; Lights  Water: No

This park is located in southwest Albuquerque and well worth the visit. It is a very large park for plenty of room for running. It also has numerous benches with shade structures. There are also trees continuing to grow to provide additional shade. A very nice park.

Dog Parks in Albuquerque – Behavioral Tips For Dog Park Attendees

With considering taking Poppy to dog parks in Albuquerque, we wanted to make sure we were doing it “right”. Meaning we wanted to make sure to keep Poppy safe while also being a good user of the parks so other dogs and families can enjoy their time as well. We found these tips to be helpful that are provided by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers.

Do

  • Check out the entrance before entering to make sure dogs aren’t congregating there.
  • Pay close attention to their dog’s play style, interrupting play if necessary to calm their dog down.
  • Move around the park so that their dog needs to keep an eye on them.
  • Remove their dog if the dog appears afraid.
  • Remove their dog if it is bullying others.
  • Respect their dog’s wish to leave.
  • Leave special toys at home to avoid resource guarding problems.

Don’t

  • Allow your dog to enter the park if there is a “gang” right next to the entrance.
  • Believe that dogs can “work it out” if you just let them do so.
  • Congregate at a picnic table or other area and chat with dog owners without watching their own dog.
  • Let their frightened dog remain in the park and hope things get better.
  • Listen to other attendees in the park, who may not understand their dog’s needs.
  • Assume a dog is aggressive when it is only trying to communicate its discomfort.

Dog parks in Albuquerque can provide numerous benefits for both dogs and their owners. Some of the potential benefits of dog parks include:

  • Exercise and socialization for dogs: Dog parks provide a safe and enclosed space where dogs can run and play off-leash, which can help them get the physical exercise and mental stimulation they need. In addition, dog parks provide an opportunity for dogs to interact with other dogs and people, which can help them socialize and develop good social skills.
  • Opportunities for dog owners to socialize: Dog parks can also be a great way for dog owners to socialize with each other and make new friends. This can be especially beneficial for people who are new to an area or who don’t have many other opportunities to socialize with others who share their interests.
  • Improved behavior and obedience: Regular visits to the dog park can help dogs learn how to behave in a variety of social situations, which can make them more well-behaved and obedient in other settings as well. In addition, dog parks can provide a chance for dog owners to work on obedience training with their dogs in a more relaxed and informal setting.
  • Benefits for the Albuquerque community: Dog parks can also provide benefits for the wider community by providing a public space where people and dogs can come together and interact. This can help to build a sense of community and can also provide an opportunity for people to learn about responsible dog ownership.
  • Improved mental health for both dogs and owners: Finally, regular visits to the dog park can provide both physical and mental health benefits for both dogs and their owners. For dogs, the opportunity to run and play can help to reduce stress and anxiety and can also improve their overall mood. For dog owners, the social and exercise opportunities provided by dog parks can also help to improve mental health and wellbeing.
