Take the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway
One of the most popular things to do in Albuquerque NM is to take the Tram to go to the top of the Sandia Mountains. In just 15 minutes you will be at the 10,378-foot top of the Sandia Mountains. Enjoy the spectacular views as you can see for miles looking to the east and west. The tram will drop you right at the Sandia Peak Ski Area and the Ten 3 restaurant that has wonderful food and amazing views. Take the time to hike along many of the trails and visit the historical Kiwanis Cabin. Reopening After Improvements in 2024
Go Ballooning
The Albuquerque area is known for a being a destination with wonderful conditions for year round ballooning. Enjoy an amazingly peaceful experience floating over the beautiful desert landscape. And don’t forget about the global ballooning event in October each year – the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta where over 500 balloons take to the skies.

Explore Old Town Albuquerque
My Mom’s absolute favorite things to do in Albuquerque was to go to Old Town. It was established in 1706 and is Albuquerque’s first neighborhood. It is now a wonderful destination to appreciate the history and culture of Albuquerque. It has numerous unique shops, restaurants and galleries to enjoy that celebrate Albuquerque and the southwest. Be sure to check out the guided history tour and ghost tour of the area to find out all about the history and hidden secrets of the area.
Drive the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway
Located just minutes from Albuquerque on the backside of the Sandia Mountains is NM 14 knows as the Turquoise Trail. It is an amazingly picturesque drive that takes you through many interesting towns including Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, Cerrillos, Madrid and Golden. There are numerous places to stop in these towns that offer wonderful food and unique treasures to purchase. Be sure to stop in at the truly unique Tinkertown Museum.
Hike the Petroglyph National Monument
The Petroglyph National Monument is located on the west side of Albuquerque. In the protected areas you can see thousands of images that have been carved into black volcanic rock. The amazing history and beauty of this area have easily made this a popular things to do in Albuquerque NM. There are defined trails that allow you to walk and view this amazing history of the area.
Visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center
Located just minutes from Old Town is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. New Mexico is home to 19 Pueblo’s and the Center celebrates their rich history, traditions and culture. The Center also has an outdoor amphitheater where you can often watch beautiful dancers perform. Be sure to check out the truly unique and tasty dishes at the Pueblo Harvest Cafe.
Experience the Bosque
The Bosque is a wooded environment that rims the Rio Grande river as it flows its way through Albuquerque. It is home to beautiful cottonwood trees and abundant wildlife. There are defined trails and paths to enjoy walking, hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. You can find numerous spots to relax and enjoy the views of the Sandia Mountains.
Shop the Downtown Farmers Market and Rail Yards Market
When the weather begins warming in the Spring months, the farmers market at Robinson Park opens on Saturday mornings. As you enjoy wonderful local music, you can shop fresh produce, breads and unique gift items. On Sunday mornings, another market is open at the Rail Yards which also has more artistic items in addition to fresh produce. The Rail Yards is a historic setting in Albuquerque that is fun to check out.
Sample the Champagne
One of our favorites things to to in Albuquerque NM is to experience the Gruet Winery. Located just north of downtown, this Winery specializes in sparking wines. In their tasting room or their wonderful outdoor patio, you can sample 9 different types of champagne. They also offer over 10 styles of wine in addition to the champagne. You can shop their store for unique items that celebrate champagne, wine and Gruet.
Take In the Arts
Many residents of the Albuquerque area find it to be a truly inspiring place to explore their artistic talents. We are blessed to have numerous galleries and theatres to view amazing art and live performances. Try the Albuquerque Art Walk that is in downtown
