The area to the east of Albuquerque on the back side of the Sandia Mountains is known as the East Mountains.
As you travel east on I40 through Albuquerque you will drive through a canyon that easily leads you to this area. The main north south road on the back side of the mountain is NM 14 which also known as the Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway.
Due to the proximity and easy commute to Albuquerque, many people choose to be part of these smaller communities and make the commute to Albuquerque

East Mountains Albuquerque Area – Things to Do
Take a day to explore Madrid. What was once a thriving mining town has been reborn into a wonderful artistic community with many shops and restaurants to enjoy.
The town of Cerrillos is also fun to explore. The are sections of the town that still look like an old western town from earlier days. In fact, Young Guns was partially filmed in Cerrillos to take advantage of the old buidlings and feel of the town.
Sandia Park is very close by. During the winter it can be a bustling ski resort and in the summer is a favorite area to hike and explore the mountain environment. At the very top is a visitors center as well as a very nice restaurant to enjoy.
The east mountains of Albuquerque is home to Paako Ridge Golf Club. Many consider it to be the finest golf course in New Mexico.
