When you first thought about the southwest and wine….does Albuquerque come to mind? It doesn’t for most people. A fun fact about Albuquerque is that it is actually the oldest wine region in America by about 200 years. Isn’t that surprising!
In 1629, a Franciscan friar named García de Zúñiga and a Capuchín monk named Antonio de Arteaga planted the first European wine grapes in what is now the U.S. at a pueblo in the Rio Grande Valley of the Province of New Mexico.
The Albuquerque area is home to a variety of wineries. The region has quite a history when it comes to wine. So whether you are looking for sparkling, red, white or something in between, you are bound to find a new favorite in Albuquerque.

Gruet Winery and Tasting Room – specializing in sparkling wine. This is one of our favorite places. Gruet offers more than 10 varieties of champagne and varieties of wine including pinot noir, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. VARA Winery and Distillery – outdoor patio has wonderful views. With connections to Spain and New Mexico, this winery produces Albarino, Carinena, Garnacha, Dorado and more. It has wonderful food to enjoy as well whether you enjoy the wine inside or while enjoying the views of the Sandia Mountains. 315 Alameda Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87113
Casa Rondena Winery – spectacular setting in the Los Ranchos area of Albuquerque. It is one of our favorite Albuquerque wineries in with its wonderful destination to sample some wine and sit in the shade by the pond. It is our favorite tasting room and setting. They feature Meritage, Viognier, Merlot, Syrah and more. 733 Chavez Rd, Los Ranchos De Albuquerque, NM 87107
Sheehan Winery – book your private tasting. This is one of the newer wineries in Albuquerque having started its family operation in 2015. It offers the most variety of whites and reds with over 35 different options to choose from. 1544 Cerro Vista Rd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105
D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro – casual type bistro with a large outdoor patio. This is a great option if you are near Old Town Albuquerque. It offers a restaurant style setting to enjoy a large menu of food to pair with their wines. 901 Rio Grande Blvd NW #B-100, Albuquerque, NM 87104
Noisy Water Winery – another option in Old Town Albuquerque. This is one of the newest wineries in Albuquerque to open its tasting room in Albuquerque Old Town. 301 Romero St Albuquerque, NM 87104
